Now this is a true for the most part
That occurred on the top floor of
Bigwig record executive's in Nashville, Tennessee
Now understand I'm not any fun or disrespecting anybody
God knows I love country with all my heart and soul
And I the Grand Ole Opry
But I do have a problem someone who
even play a D chord on a guitar
Telling someone with a dream they won't get far
So this song is dedicated to all those underdogs me
Out there running
get discouraged if you have a dream
Don't be to chase it down
how it goes

He said, "Son, don't get offended by I'm about to say
I can see you a passion
For the songs you and play
But you lack we all call commercial appeal
And you just don't have what it
To it here in Nashville"

Well my felt like a train wreck
But I a smile on my face
I said, "Thank you for time, sir"
Put my guitar in its case
Our little conversation was like a
my dreams
'Cause God knows I'd never sell my soul to 'n' roll
Or rap or wear those skinny jeans

you know I'd rather sing my own songs
Than be a puppet on a
wear what I want to wear
I'm gonna sing what I sing
Heaven all I need
Is my faith, my fans, my and my family
Besides I'd rather be an old fence post in
the king of Tennessee

So I up my old pickup truck
And I drove back home to
Got a gig off old 66
At this ballroom The Armadillo
And for the thousand shows or so
Not a showed up
I thought about quitting other day
But I just kept on kicking cup

Yeah, I kept kicking that can by
Blood, sweat, and
And wouldn't you know I became an overnight
In just ten years
And now I'm packing out all the halls
And the every night
I got a pretty wife, a ranch, a band, a bus, a
I'd say I'm alright

And you I'd rather sing my own songs
Than be a puppet on a
I'll wear what I to wear
I'm gonna sing I wanna sing
Heaven all I need
Is my faith, my fans, my friends and my
I'd rather be an old fence post in Texas
Than the of Tennessee

Oh, how a little front porch picking, boys

Well, you know that old record man
Showed up one night at honky tonking bar
my show he said,
"Son, I you might be the next big country star"
He said, "We how you keep it raw
We like how you it real
And I think you may have what
We all like to call appeal"
Huh, ain't something
Well, sir

I'd rather my own songs
Than be a on a string
I'll what I want to wear
And I'm gonna what I wanna sing
Heaven knows all I
Is my faith, my fans, my and my family
I'd rather be an old fence post in Texas
Than the of Tennessee
God Tennessee
But I'd rather be just an old fence in Texas
Than sell my soul to rock 'n'
Or rap or wear those tight jeans
